The Opportunity Community Services Department | Seasonal Full-Time Position (2 month July - August) |Monday - Friday | 8:00am - 4:30pm

Lacombe County has a great summer opportunity for a responsible and motivated individual for the River Weed Inspector position. The successful candidate will canoe the Blindman, Medicine, and Red Deer rivers, handpicking prohibited noxious and noxious weeds along sensitive areas near the riverbanks. While working outdoors in a scenic river environment, this position is integral to environmental management of these river systems within the County.

Key Responsibilities
• Develop a good knowledge and identification of prohibited noxious and noxious weeds.
• Develop strong boat safety and paddling skills (be able to identify potential hazards found on the river).
• Perform weed management by handpicking weeds, collecting them in a bag in the canoe and dropping them off at the designated locations.
• Occasionally, operate a backpack sprayer for herbicide application.
• Perform responsibilities in a safe and effective manner. Must be able to follow safe work practices and abide by all safety polices, rules and regulations.

Key Qualifications
• An enthusiastic, friendly and outgoing personality.
• A valid Alberta class 5 driver’s license (acceptable abstract required upon hire).
• Self-motivated and able to work well with minimum supervision.
• Able to perform physical work involving bending, lifting, and moving of light or heavy objects (up to 50lbs).
• Preference given to candidates with previous flatwater or whitewater canoeing experience.
• Must have proven ability to interact with others in a calm, courteous and respectful manner.
This is a physically demanding position, with repetitive movement, and requires frequent bending, kneeling, occasional heavy lifting, and walking on uneven surfaces. The assigned duties include sitting for extended periods of time while paddling a canoe and driving a vehicle. Canoeing is performed on rivers, which may consist of a variety of obstacles including rocks, trees and logs, changing water currents, and variable weather conditions. The employee mainly works in an outdoor environment, subject to heat, cold, dry, dusty and/or wet conditions, as well as insects, livestock and wildlife.
The wage for this position starts at $24.46/hr (includes stat and vacation pay)
